• Sharing companionship with patients & families
• Reading aloud to a patient
• Being a good listener
• Providing respite care in the home to relieve family members from the constant demands of caring for a loved one.
• Running errands for a patient such as picking up medications, or doing some grocery shopping.
• Making calls of support to families who are dealing with the death of a loved one.


To make sure that volunteers are fully acquainted with Hospice of Frederick County’s mission, services and programs, and feel comfortable with whatever responsibilities they will assume, HFC offers a comprehensive training program.


A two-hour introduction to the history & philosophy of hospice, including an overview of volunteer opportunities available through Hospice of Frederick County. Evening classes are scheduled frequently throughout the year. To register call the Volunteer Coordinator at 240-566-3038.


A sixteen-hour, 2 day training designed to equip the caregiving volunteer with the background & skills required to provide practical assistance & emotional support to those nearing the ends of their lives, & their loved ones.


Specialized training in skills & techniques for volunteers who provide support to individuals who are grieving.


Hospice of Frederick County is constantly seeking ways to add to the peace & comfort of our patients & their families through special programs that utilize volunteers.

Whenever a special outreach program is designed, a comprehensive training for interested volunteers is always provided to ensure both the volunteer’s comfort & the program’s success.


Interactive educational workshops presented monthly on specific topics that are intended to enhance the knowledge & skills of volunteers.
